The Northwoods Alliance, Inc (NWA) is a 501(c)(3) non-profit and a 509(a)(2) public charity. Started in 1981 as an environmental organization opposing the placement of a nuclear waste depository in the Midwest, Northwoods Alliance has its roots in protecting the land. We are committed to land conservation for the economic, social and intrinsic values to the public, as well as the immense ecological value.
Today our primary focus is the conservation of land and the protection of water in the border lakes region and the Lake Superior watershed. We actively seek out long-term protection for large properties that provide outdoor recreational opportunities, intact habitat for terrestrial and aquatic species, and an opportunity for sustainable resource management. In particular, we emphasize habitat for threatened or endangered species, and sensitive ecosystems such as old growth forests, lakes, streams, and wetlands. As a necessary good to society we embrace sustainable forest management, as well as appreciate wilderness and wildlife habitat, and we strive for safe public recreation.
